CEO of Detroit Federation Delivers TAMID Seminar

March 15, 2010
TAMID returned from spring break with a bang, welcoming CEO of the Detroit Jewish Federation Scott Kaufman to deliver a seminar.  Mr. Kaufman is an accomplished leader in the worlds of business and Jewish community work.  Before taking the helm at the Detroit Federation, Mr. Kaufman was a real estate developer and founding partner of the Joe Dumars Fieldhouse.
At TAMID, we pride ourselves on the quality of speakers in our education program, and Mr. Kaufman is a shining example of that.  He shared deep insight into the future of American Jewry, the United States-Israel relationship, and some of the challenges facing Detroit’s Jewish community.
Mr. Kaufman began by praising TAMID.  He described how the Jewish non-profit world has long favored social-work oriented programs, ignoring the talents and ambitions of business-minded folks.  TAMID, he argued, is changing the paradigm.  Israel no longer needs to be babied; it needs to be partnered with.
Mr. Kaufman also addressed some of the challenges facing the Detroit community.  He proposed that some of the bad PR Detroit has gotten of late is unwarranted.  Economic metrics are trending up and quality of life is high in Southeast Michigan.  He then compared the challenges facing Detroit with the challenges that have faced Israel, calling for a revival in entrepreneurship and risk-taking in the region.
Mr. Kaufman concluded the talk with a lively discussion on how to boost the Jewish young adult population in Detroit, and he took questions from TAMID members.  After the session, TAMID members joined Mr. Kaufman for dinner at a local pizzeria.
Once again, viewers around the world joined our seminar’s online stream.   Click here for a recording of the seminar. (Start time 00:46:50)
TAMID member Jeff Ong introduced Mr. Kaufman.
